| Should my computer perform better than it does? |
|
Maybe the most universal way for finding this out, is by installing one of Futuremark's 3Dmark programs and comparing your score to other scores online. We will go through this in four simple steps.
It should not be hard to find a well-written review of your video card, which includes a 3DMark score for that specific card. The easiest way is to check out "Video card reviews" section in our Review database, where you should be able to find it. If your video card is not listed in our database, you should go to Google and write in: "name of your video card" review (example: Geforce 9800GTX review). Go through the review and before checking the 3dMark score they got, check the test system configuration and make sure, that your computer is similar to theirs (similar processor and equal amount of ram). If the difference is too big, you should take some time for finding a review in which similar hardware to yours is used. After that check the 3DMark score and remember, which version of 3DMark they used (01, 03, 05, 06 or Vantage).
To download 3DMark, go to Futuremark's download page and choose the version that was used in the review you checked earlier. All you need is a free version of any of these, don't bother with buying the registered one.
After you have successfully downloaded 3DMark to your computer, install it and run it through the shortcut on your desktop. Before running, you have to be 100% sure, that options such as antialiasing and anisotropic filtering are disabled in your video card's control panel as they have a significant effect on your computer's video performance. After that we are ready! Run the benchmark at default settings by pressing the "Run Benchmark" or "Run 3DMark" button. Wait until the test is complete (it could take quite some time, but it is interesting to watch) and the program will automatically display your computer's score at the end.
The moment has come. Is the score similar to that in the review? If it is, that means everything is ok and that you should not bother with this any longer. Otherwise (if the score is more than 5% worse and your computer's hardware is not any worse than the hardware in the test system), we probably have a problem. To find out what could cause it and how to fix it, please see other articles in "Improve performance" category.
