| Memory usage surprisingly high in Windows 7 |
|
Would you be surprised, if someone told you, that 86 percent of PCs running Windows 7 are very low on RAM, using 90-95 percent of their memory? Well it is true. XPnet community members have a system performance tool installed on their computers, which monitors performance and periodically reports data back to XPnet servers. We are talking about tens of thousands of computers here, so this data isv very accurate. Why does that happen? Firstly, you must be aware, this is not as alarming as it sounds. This is a result of an extensive file caching strategy of Windows, that has begun with Windows Vista. Name of this caching technology is SuperFetch and what it does is it fills up your empty PC memory with various files from your hard drive in case you will need to access them later. Windows is basically thinking:"Why should there be all this empty RAM, if I can use it to improve user's experience by fetching data directly from it instead from a slow hard drive, when he needs it". However, if an application like a game needs this memory, Windows will quickly empty it and make it available. So do not be worried, if your computer with Windows 7 uses most of its RAM at idle, it will probably be made available when you need it. Of course you will always benefit from more system memory. I think you should have a minimum of 2GB of RAM, if you are running Windows 7 or Vista, but it is always better to have 3 or 4GB just to make sure you will never run out of it while doing regular stuff.
