| European Union fines Intel for 1,06 billion € |
|
Today was the D-day for Intel. European Union revealed, how much will Intel have to pay for engaging anti competitive practices designed to exclude other competitors from the CPU market. Earlier this week we got to know, that this fine could be as high as 10 per cent of Intel's annual turnover. That is 2,8 billion € or 3.8 billion $. This is definitely a record fine - we are still awaiting Intel's comments. What exactly did Intel do to deserve such fine? They were offering discounts to big PC suppliers like Nec, HP, Lenovo and Dell, if they stopped using AMD processors in their products. Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said: "Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years. Such a serious and sustained violation of the EU's antitrust rules cannot be tolerated."  EDIT: Intel's CEO Paul Otellini gave his statement: "Intel takes strong exception to this decision. We believe the decision is wrong and ignores the reality of a highly competitive microprocessor marketplace – characterized by constant innovation, improved product performance and lower prices. There has been absolutely zero harm to consumers. Intel will appeal." Â
