A video about an interesting computer emerged on Youtube. It turns out it is called "Atlas Folder" and it is a GPU folding farm that will be running Folding@Home at Stanford University. If you do not know about Folding@Home - it is a program, that calculates protein folding - mainly for pharmaceuticals. This "farm" consists of 5 sub-systems, each having 4 dual-GPU video cards! They used MSI's motherboards K9A2 Platinum (and one Foxconn Destroyer), because these have 4 PCI-e slots with enough space between them to use so thick graphics cards. Each motherboard has 2GB of RAM and an AMD Phenom 9950 processor. In addition to that, they have another "weaker" PC and a PlayStation 3 there. Why 4 fastest video cards and only one average CPU with only 2GB of RAM? Because video cards are doing all the hard work here - Folding@Home supports CUDA. CUDA is Nvidia's technology for calculation of non-graphical operations and these cards do it surprisingly well! This setup (6 quad-core CPUs and 23 video cards) is estimated to 41 Teraflops. This is crazy - especially looking at the price of such system (it is very low compared to "normal"- CPU-based super-computers with such calculation performance). Source: endagadget  |
